Every warning light in a car belongs to one of two groups: the ones that let you finish your journey, and the ones that mean the next few kilometres can turn a repair into a replacement. Telling them apart takes about three seconds, as long as you read the colour before you read the symbol.
Colour first, symbol second

Two habits are worth building. The first is to watch the ignition self-test: when you switch the ignition on, most warning lights come on for a second or two and then go out. That short moment is your only chance to notice a warning that no longer works at all. The second is to trust the colour before the symbol, because symbols differ between manufacturers while the colour code does not.
Red lights: stop as soon as it is safe
Oil pressure — an oil can symbol. This is not the same as a low oil level warning. It means the pump is no longer pushing oil through the engine, and an engine without oil pressure seizes in minutes. Stop, switch off, check the level, and do not restart if the light comes back.
Coolant temperature — a thermometer floating in liquid. The engine is overheating. Stop and let it cool down before opening anything; a hot cooling system is under pressure and will spray scalding coolant at whoever opens the cap.
Charging system — a battery symbol. The alternator has stopped charging. The car will keep running on what is left in the battery, typically for twenty to forty minutes, and then stop wherever it happens to be. Switch off everything you do not need and drive straight to a workshop, or stop and call for help.
Brake system — a circle with an exclamation mark, sometimes the word BRAKE. First check that the handbrake is fully released. If it is, the light means low brake fluid or a fault in the circuit, and the car should not be driven.
Airbag or SRS — the airbags and belt tensioners are disabled. The car drives normally, which is exactly what makes this one easy to ignore, but in a collision the restraints may not fire.
Power steering — a steering wheel, often with an exclamation mark. Steering still works, but with much more force needed, especially at parking speeds.
Amber lights: keep driving, book the workshop
Check engine — an engine outline. The most common and least specific light on any dashboard. It covers everything from a loose fuel cap to a failing ignition coil. A steady amber light means drive on carefully; a flashing one means unburnt fuel is reaching the catalytic converter, so reduce speed and get it looked at immediately.
ABS — normal braking still works, but the anti-lock function does not, so the wheels can lock under hard braking.
Traction or stability control — a car with skid marks behind it. Flashing means the system is working right now, on a wet or icy surface. Permanently lit means it is either switched off or faulty.
Tyre pressure — a horseshoe shape with an exclamation mark. Check all four tyres with a gauge; the system reports a relative drop and can be triggered by a cold morning as easily as by a slow puncture.
Diesel particulate filter — the filter is loading up with soot because the car has been used mostly for short trips. A longer drive at higher revs usually lets it regenerate. Ignore it long enough and the filter has to be cleaned or replaced.
Glow plugs — a coil symbol on diesel engines. Flashing after start-up means a fault in the preheating system, which shows up as hard starting on cold mornings.
Brake pad wear — the pads have reached their minimum thickness. Cheap to fix now, expensive once the discs are scored.
Green and blue lights are not faults
Green means a system is on and doing its job: side lights, cruise control, indicators. Blue is reserved almost everywhere for main beam. White is used for information from driver assistance systems, such as lane keeping or speed limit recognition. None of them require any action, and their absence is not a problem.
What to do when a light comes on
- Read the colour. Red is an instruction to stop, amber is an appointment, green and blue are information.
- If it is red, pull over somewhere safe and switch the engine off before you investigate anything.
- Check the gauges and the simple things first: temperature, fuel level, whether a door or the handbrake is the actual cause.
- Look the symbol up in the owner's manual. Manufacturers use their own icons, and the manual is the only source that matches your exact car.
- If a red light returns after restarting, do not drive on. Recovery costs less than an engine.
Electric and hybrid cars: the same lights, plus a few of their own
Brakes, airbags, tyre pressure and driver assistance warn in exactly the same way in an electric car. What is added is a ready indicator confirming the car will move when you press the accelerator, a high-voltage system warning that always means a workshop rather than a driveway repair, and a reduced-power symbol, usually a turtle, which appears when the battery is too cold, too hot or nearly flat.
What you will not find in a combustion car is the state-of-charge display with remaining range, which in an electric car takes the place a fuel gauge used to occupy.
A dashboard with no lights is not the same as a car with no faults
Fault memory can be cleared with a diagnostic tool costing less than a tank of fuel, and the warning stays away until the car has completed enough drive cycles to detect the fault again. Disconnecting the battery has a similar effect on some systems. Before a viewing, that is a quick way to make a dashboard look clean.
This is why the dashboard tells you about the last few minutes of the car's life and nothing about the years before. Service records show whether the same fault has been coming back for three years. Mileage history shows whether the odometer reading in front of you fits the rest of the car's story. Neither can be cleared with an OBD tool in a car park.
When you inspect a used car, look at the dashboard during the ignition self-test rather than after the engine is running: a warning that never lights up at all has usually been disabled on purpose, and that is worth more attention than a light that honestly stays on.
