History of Škoda - From Metallurgy to Automotive

Škoda's story begins in 1859 with the establishment of metal works in Pilsen. Taken over by Emil Škoda in 1869, these facilities evolved from the metal to the armaments industry. After Emil's death in 1900, the factories became one of the largest manufacturing companies in Austro-Hungary. After World War I, Škoda started producing cars, with the first model leaving the factory in 1924.

Laurin & Klement - The Birth of Škoda Auto

In 1895 in Mladá Boleslav, mechanic Václav Laurin and bookkeeper Václav Klement founded Laurin & Klement, initially producing bicycles, then motorcycles. In 1905, the company released its first car, Voiturette. The company's development also included the production of trucks, buses, aircraft engines, agricultural machinery, and rollers. In 1925, Laurin & Klement merged with the Škoda conglomerate, laying the foundations for the future automotive giant.

Development and Innovations at Škoda Auto

Škoda Auto, as a merged company, continued to innovate in the automotive field. The first cars with the new Škoda logo were presented in 1926. The introduction of assembly lines in 1930 allowed for offering cars at affordable prices, key to the company's growth. World War II brought production changes, but after its end, Škoda once again focused on passenger cars.

Volkswagen Era and Global Expansion

After the fall of communism in Eastern Europe, Škoda Auto partnered with Volkswagen AG, leading to the German group acquiring 30% of Škoda's shares in 1991. This process was completed in 2000 when Volkswagen became the sole shareholder. This partnership allowed Škoda Auto to enter global markets and significantly influenced the quality and technology of its vehicles.
