Hyundai's History, Beginnings, and Expansion
Hyundai embarked on its automotive journey in 1967 with the establishment of Hyundai Motor Co. Ltd. The following year marked the start of production for its first model, the Cortina, in collaboration with Ford Motor Company. In 1974, Hyundai introduced the Pony, its inaugural proprietary car model, paving the way for international expansion, including in Europe and Australia.
Development and Acquisitions
The late 1990s represented a period of growth and acquisitions for Hyundai. In 1999, the company acquired a majority stake in Kia Motors, creating the Hyundai Motor Group. The first decade of the 21st century was characterized by further expansion, including entering the Chinese market through a joint venture with the Chinese conglomerate BAIC.
Localization and Innovation
Hyundai adapted to various markets by introducing vehicles designed for specific regional conditions. Examples include the i30, developed in its German research center, and the Eon, developed in India. The company continued this strategy, creating vehicles for the Chinese and Brazilian markets.
Canceled Projects
In the first decade of the 21st century, Hyundai planned to expand its lineup to include minivans like the Hyundai Portico. However, due to changing market conditions and the financial crisis, some of these projects were canceled.
